What is Craniosacral Therapy?

“Deep listening is miraculous for both listener and speaker. When someone receives us with open-hearted, non-judging, intensely interested listening, our spirits expand.”               Sue Patton Thoele

Listening Hands

Imagine being engaged in conversation; to have the opportunity to speak without interruption, to have your words and story met with gentle compassion and non-judgement – to be truly heard and accepted.

Craniosacral therapy, often referred to as the ‘listening therapy’, offers you (and your body) exactly that opportunity.

Through a gentle, light touch the therapist listens primarily through her hands to subtle fluid movements within the body. From the rhythm of these movements, imbalances and restrictions caused by disease, injury or stress, can be detected. Your body, through its natural capacity to self-repair, is then supported to release these restrictions and attain balance.

Benefits

The very gentle contact of craniosacral therapy makes it comfortable and well tolerated, even in the most painful conditions, when other manipulative types of therapy are not. It is especially suitable for the frail, elderly, babies and children.

The pace of treatment is determined by your body and not by the therapist, which means that you remain comfortable and in control during the session. As your body (rather than your mind) sets the treatment agenda, you may find that the condition that brought you for treatment may not be the first issue to be resolved.

Craniosacral therapy can be combined with conventional treatment and often enhances the benefits of other forms of bodywork or complementary therapy.

This whole body therapy has proved helpful in a wide variety of conditions including stress, back pain, muscular aches, bone/joint conditions, migraines, chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia, effects of trauma, emotional difficulties/depression, TMJ issues to name a few. It has successfully treated infants with colic, irritability and birth trauma – they respond well to this non-verbal language of communication.

However, you don’t have to be ill to benefit from craniosacral therapy. It can enhance your sense of well being, improve energy levels, help you to engage with life more fully or just be comfortable with whatever is happening in your life.

What’s involved in a session?

You are fully clothed except for shoes, large belts and jewellery. Your total comfort is paramount during a treatment. To this end you are made comfortable lying on the treatment couch. If this is difficult, you can be treated sitting.

The process will be explained to you and your permission requested before any treatment commences. You will always have the option to refuse contact if you feel uncomfortable about this in any way. You are in control at all times.

Your first session lasts one and quarter hours, while subsequent sessions last one-hour.

Throughout the session I will ask you how you are. You are part of the treatment process. You may or may not become aware of sensations in your body such as heat and tingling, or you may feel nothing. Please be reassured that there is no right or wrong response – people respond differently to craniosacral therapy. Sometimes it may take a few sessions before you become aware of the subtle sensations in the body.
